Production Process and Technical Challenges

The production of BS960 relies on advanced metallurgical equipment and precise process control:

  • Smelting and Continuous Casting: Basic oxygen or electric arc furnace smelting is employed, followed by LF refining and VD vacuum degassing to ensure high purity of the molten steel. Electromagnetic stirring during continuous casting reduces segregation.
  • Thermomechanical Controlled Processing: Multi-pass rolling is conducted in the austenite non-recrystallization region, accompanied by laminar cooling to form a fine bainite/martensite multiphase structure. This process requires precise control of the final rolling temperature and cooling rate.
  • Heat Treatment: Offline quenching and tempering processes are adopted to further enhance uniformity and toughness, ensuring the steel is delivered in a tempered condition.
