Buyers usually meet Baosteel one product at a time — an NM400 plate here, a BS960E truck part there. But behind those grades sits one hot-rolled heat treatment platform producing four product families, all quenched and tempered on the same advanced thin-plate lines. This reference maps the complete Baosteel heat-treated program — grades, size ranges, key mechanical values and delivery states — from the official BRR hot-rolled heat-treated products handbook. It is the page to bookmark when you need to know what is actually makeable, not just what is stocked.

NM wear plate: the core of the program
The NM family (formerly BW — BW400 = NM400, and so on) is specified to GB/T 24186, hardness-class named. Guaranteed values from the handbook:
| Grade | Yield ReH min. (MPa) | Tensile Rm min. (MPa) | Elongation A50 min. (%) | Hardness (HBW) | -40 °C impact KV2 (J) | 90° bend mandrel |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NM360 | ≥900 | ≥1,000 | ≥12 | 360±30 | ≥20 | d = 5a |
| NM400 / NM400E | ≥960 | ≥1,100 | ≥10 | 400±30 | ≥20 / ≥60 (E) | d = 6a |
| NM450 / NM450E | ≥1,100 | ≥1,200 | ≥7 | 450±30 | ≥20 / ≥60 (E) | d = 5a |
| NM500 / NM500E | ≥1,250 | ≥1,350 | ≥7 | 500±30 | ≥20 / ≥60 (E) | d = 7a |
| NM600 | — | — | — | 600±30 | — | — |
Three engineering notes worth keeping:
- The E grades exist for impact. Where standard NM400 guarantees 20 J at -40 °C, NM400E guarantees 60 J — the version to specify for crusher liners, dump bodies under rock impact and any dynamic loading.
- Impact test conditions are defined: Charpy V-notch, values correspond to 10×10×55 mm specimens (sub-size values reduce proportionally); plates under 6 mm are not impact-tested; bending is transverse.
- The envelope keeps growing. The handbook program lists 2–20 mm, but Baosteel's new continuous heat treatment line runs 1.5–25 mm — including the world's only 1.5 mm heat-treated wear plate, which enables weight savings no competitor can match at the thin end.
BS structural: 800–1,300 MPa welded structures
The BS family covers quenched-and-tempered structural grades from 800 MPa to 1,300 MPa yield-adjacent classes — BS800E through BS1300D — for cranes, aerial work platforms and mining equipment where every kilogram of weldment counts. Carbon equivalents are published per grade (BS960E: Ceq 0.52, Pcm 0.28), and Baosteel publishes full welding data: preheat rules, GMAW heat input limits of 8–12 kJ/cm, and a filler matching table to EN 12534 / AWS A5.28 / its own BH wire series. See our dedicated BS960E welding guide and the data-driven BS960E vs Strenx 960 comparison.
BST beam steel: the lightweight trailer revolution
BST900L and BST1000L are 900/1,000 MPa-class beam steels developed for welded main beams of semi-trailers and special vehicles, delivered quenched and tempered (Q+T):
| Grade | Yield ReH min. (MPa) | Tensile Rm min. (MPa) | Elongation min. (%) | -40 °C impact (J) | Sizes (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BST900L | ≥850 | ≥900 | ≥8 | ≥27 | 3–12 × 900–2,000 × 2,000–15,000 |
| BST1000L | ≥950 | ≥1,000 | ≥8 | ≥27 | 4–12 × 900–2,000 × 2,000–15,000 |
Baosteel's documented flagship application: a 2022 lightweight fence-type semi-trailer built entirely on BST1000L beams and companion high-strength upper-structure steels (BST1000X side rails, BST850X cross members, BST800HW floor) cut body weight ~10 % versus mainstream 700 MPa designs — saving over 23 tonnes of CO2 per trailer per year. Baosteel's welding guidance for BST1000L: no preheat up to 8 mm at 20 °C; 75 °C preheat above 8 mm; interpass ≤200 °C; GMAW heat input 5–12 kJ/cm, SAW ≤20 kJ/cm.
BP protection steel: 300–600 HB armor grades
For armored and security applications, the BP family spans BP300 (B900FD) through BP600 at 2–12 mm — cash-in-transit vehicles, security doors, bank counters, safes, shields and helmets. Guaranteed hardness values are 300, 440, 500/500T and 600 HB; machining calls for HSS-E or HSS-Co drills and coated-carbide milling cutters, water-jet cutting preserves the ballistic edge performance, and bending radii are specified (BP500 ≥8× thickness, BP440 ≥5× thickness).
Sourcing from the full program
Not every grade is warehoused in every port — but the program above is what the mill can make. As a Baosteel distributor we quote from this full matrix: NM400 / NM450 / NM500 wear plate, BS960E and the wider high-strength range, with original mill test certificates per heat and the complete Baosteel supply program behind it. For sizes outside the listed envelope, the mill accepts negotiated specifications — ask us and we will confirm feasibility with Baosteel directly.
